he/she received it to anyone he/she sees fit to do so provided
the original files are complete and unaltered in any way.
ONE may not be "resold" by Shareware distributors for a

disk does not constitute the registration of the program.
Section 1. GENERAL
1.1 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS.
ONE will run on almost any minimal system configuration,
although an EGA or VGA display is necessary.
1.2 BASIC HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE RECOMMENDATIONS
As noted earlier, the program has been operated on several
systems with varying degrees of performance. Although designed
for optimum performance on today's newer systems, the program
will nonetheless function on older machines.
1.2.1 The minimum hardware configuration is as follows:
o - 256K random access memory (RAM)
o - Sufficient hard disk space
o - One 360K double-sided, double-density or
1.2 megabyte high-density 5.25" disk drive
or
One 720K double-sided, double-density or
1.44 megabyte high-density 3.5" disk drive
o - Color (EGA or VGA; preferably, VGA) display
1.2.2 The minimum operating system is:
MicroSoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS) 3.30 or higher.
Section 2: GETTING STARTED
2.1 SYSTEM BASICS.
Simply follow the onscreen prompts when playing ONE. See
Section 1 for system requirements. ONE is a simple, text-
oriented game and demands little system overhead.
[ 03 ]
2.2 PROGRAM INSTALLATION.
Installation is as simple as copying all files from the
distribution diskette(s) to your hard drive, (in the sub-
directory of your choice), and unzipping all files. Any .ZIP
files MUST be unzipped with PKUNZIP, Version 2.04g or higher.
(In some cases you may receive a self-extracting file with an
.EXE extension instead of a .ZIP file. If so, simply copy this
file to your hard drive sub-directory of choice and extract
the files by typing the file name. You may delete the original
file from the sub-directory once the files have been
extracted. Be careful not to destroy the original self-
extracting file, wherever it may be located.)
When completed, you will have the following files in your
selected sub-directory:
ONE100.COM <-- The main executable
ONE100.DOC <-- This file
ORDER.DOC <-- Order form for Registered versions
Once all files have been unzipped or extracted, simply type
ONE100 to begin the program. You may print either of the
.DOC files to the printer (LPT1) by using the DOS command
below at the DOS prompt:
TYPE ONE100.DOC > PRN
or
TYPE ORDER.DOC > PRN
Both .DOC files are standard ASCII text files and may also be
browsed or printed with any text editor or any word processor
which is capable of handling text files.
2.3 THE GAME PARAMETERS SCREEN
This screen allows you to set the parameters used during game
play. There are four parameters you may set as follows:
PLAYER'S NAME (registered version only) - Enter your name here
(up to 10 characters). If you hit the ENTER key at this point
the game will automatically refer to you as "Player 1" during
play (you are always "Player 1" the in unregistered version).
PAUSE INTERVAL - Use this option to adjust the pause interval
(in seconds) used during message displays. This can be useful
for slowing down the messages on faster systems. Entering
a 1 gives the shortest pauses, 9 gives the longest. We
suggest you start with 3 (the default) until you are familiar
with playing this game.
NUMBER OF POINTS IN GAME - Use this option to set the number
of points that will end the game. Remember, as soon as ANY
player reaches this point value, the game is over and the
player with the lowest score wins.
[ 04 ]
VERIFY CARDS PLAYED (registered version only) - Enter a Y here
to activate the messages to verify each card before it is
played. You are given the opportunity to verify the card and
change your mind if you wish. Enter a N here to disable the
messages. This is especially helpful for new players, but the
game is generally played faster if this feature is disabled.
(Unregistered version is always a Y and cannot be changed).
BEEP WHEN CARD IS PLAYED - Enter a Y here to have the program
beep whenever a card is played onto the DISCARD pile. This is
especially helpful if you have the PAUSE INTERVAL set to a
lower number and the game is playing quickly. Enter a N here
to turn the beep off.
PARAMETERS OKAY - Enter a Y here to accept the parameters as
entered above. Enter a N here to reenter the parameters.
DO YOU WISH THE MOUSE TO BE ACTIVE (registered version only) -
Enter a Y here if you wish to use the mouse - otherwise the
mouse driver is deactivated. (This option defaults to N in the
unregistered version and cannot be changed).
2.4 KEYS TO KNOW
Simple, single keystroke commands are used to play ONE.
Messages are displayed in the communications box in the lower
right-hand corner of the screen. Here is a list of valid
keystrokes and functions:
X - (not shown on any menu) - "Boss" key. This is a "hot" key
that is available at all times. If you hit "X" at any time, a
"Boss" screen is presented; that is a screen that looks like
an ordinary DOS prompt. Strike any other key to restore the
game and resume from that point.
F1 - displays the HELP screen - this is available at any time.
(EXCEPT in the SCORES screen)
F2 - displays SCORES in the Score Table for the current match.
This is available at any time. (EXCEPT in the HELP screen)
Available ONLY during Player's turn:
D - DRAW, draws one card. If you cannot play a card, you must
draw at least one card. If you can then make a play, fine -
otherwise you must pass (see PASS function below and RULES OF
THE GAME section). PLEASE NOTE: No player can hold more than
18 cards in his hand at any one time - if you have 18 cards
and cannot make a play, you MUST pass.
P - PASS, pass your turn. If after you have DRAWN at least
one card you still cannot play, you must pass (see DRAW
function above and RULES OF THE GAME section).
[ 05 ]
O - ONE, declare ONE on this play. All players must declare
ONE before they play the second to the last card in their
hand. If you are down to two cards in your hand, you must
make the ONE declaration BEFORE you play your second to the
last card, otherwise you are penalized for not declaring (see
RULES OF THE GAME section).
Q - QUIT, terminates the game.
Available only during COLOR SELECTION phase of Player's turn:
Use these keys to select a color after playing a Wild or Wild
Draw 4 card:
B - Blue
G - Green
R - Red
Y - Yellow
TO PLAY A CARD: Type in the number of the card you wish to
play. If you have more than 9 cards in your hand and wish to
play a card that is numbered less than 10, you must include
the preceding zero (i.e., to play card 7, type "07").
2.5 RULES OF THE GAME
ONE is an Uno-like game and adheres to the rules as outlined
below:
OBJECT: Points are scored by ridding yourself of all cards in
your hand before your opponents. Point values of cards left
over in your hand are added to your score at the end of the
hand (whenever someone "goes out" by playing all of their
cards until none remain in their hand). You win the game by
having the lowest overall score whenever someone's score
reaches or exceeds the game point score (500 points is the
default, you can set this in the parameter screen to whatever
you want).
IN THE DECK THERE ARE:
19 Blue cards - 0-9, 19 Green cards - 0-9, 19 Red cards - 0-9,
19 Yellow cards - 0-9, 8 Draw Two cards - 2 each in blue,
green, red and yellow, 8 Reverse cards - 2 each in blue,
green, red and yellow, 8 Skip cards - 2 each in blue,
green, red and yellow, 4 Wild cards and 4 Wild Draw Four
cards.
ONE IN SUMMARY: Each player is dealt 7 cards with the
remaining ones placed face down to form a DRAW pile. The top
card of the DRAW pile is turned over to begin a DISCARD pile.
[ 06 ]
The first player has to match the card in the DISCARD pile
either by number, color or word. For example, if the card is a
red 7, the player must discard a red card or any color 7. Or,
the player can throw down a Wild card. If the player doesn't
have anything to match, he must pick a card from the DRAW
pile. If he can play what is drawn, great. Otherwise, the
player passes and play moves to the next person.
When you have two cards left and are about to play one,
leaving only one card in your hand, you must declare ONE
(signifying that you have only one card remaining in your
hand). Failure to do this results in your having to pick two
cards from the DRAW pile. This is, of course, if you get
caught by the other players (and you ALWAYS get caught by the
computer players!)
Once a player has no cards left, the hand is over. Points are
scored and the next hand is dealt. That's ONE in summary.
CHOOSING A DEALER: Every player is dealt a card. The person
who is dealt the highest number card deals. "Word" cards don't
count. Player to the left of the dealer starts play.
STARTING THE DISCARD PILE: If a word card is the first card
turned over from the DRAW pile, this is what happens:
Wild Draw Four - It's put back in the deck and another one is
chosen.
Wild Card - The player to the left of the dealer chooses a
color then plays.
Draw Two Card - The player to the left of dealer must pick two
cards and then play moves to the next player.
Reverse Card - The dealer plays first, but play then goes to
the right instead of left.
Skip Card - The player to the left of the dealer is skipped
and play moves immediately to the next player.
WHAT "WORD" CARDS MEAN:
Draw Two Cards - When this card is played, the next person to
play must draw 2 cards and lose his turn.
Reverse - Reverse direction of play. Play to the left becomes
play to the right, and vice versa.
Skip - The next player to play loses his turn and is
"skipped".
[ 07 ]
Wild Card - This card can be played on ANY card. The person
playing the card calls any color to continue play, including
the one presently being played if desired. A Wild card can be
played even if the player has another playable card in his
hand.
Wild Draw Four Card - This is the best, the nastiest, the most
tricky card to have. Not only does the player get to call the
next color played, but the next player has to pick 4 cards and
lose his turn. You can only play this card when you don't have
a card in your hand that matches the COLOR of the card
previously played. (A player may have a matching number or
word cards of a different color in his hand and still play his
Wild Draw Four card).
ENDING THE GAME: The game is over when one player plays his
last card. If the last card is a Draw Two or Wild Draw Four
card, the next player will draw the two or four cards. These
cards are counted when points are totaled.
When the DRAW pile is depleted and no one has gone out, the
cards are reshuffled and the play continues.
2.6 SCORING
SCORING: At the end of the game, when one player has played
his last card, the other players get points for each card left
in their hand, as follows:
All cards 0-9 - Face Value
Draw 2 - 20 points
Reverse - 20 points
Skip - 20 points
Wild - 50 points
Wild Draw 4 - 50 points
The WINNER is the person with the lowest score when the game
total points are reached (see GAME PARAMETERS SCREEN section).
2.7 USING THE MOUSE (registered version only)
Using the mouse simplifies the game and generally makes
playing faster. Please note that if you do make the mouse
active you may still use the keyboard also.
The grey "buttons" in the upper left-hand corner of the screen
may be clicked on with the left mouse button during Player 1's
turn to select those functions.
During Player 1's turn you may also use the mouse for the
following manner:
[ 08 ]
For the DRAW, PASS, ONE and QUIT functions in the
communication box, simply click on the desired word with the
left mouse button to select that function.
You may click on the "YES/NO" boxes in the communication box
when they are presented to you with the left mouse button.
Click on the desired color box with the left mouse button when
they are presented to you for new color selection after
playing a Wild or Wild Draw 4 card.
You may also click on the DECK with the left mouse button to
DRAW a card.
You may PASS by clicking the right mouse button anywhere on
the screen if you have already previously DRAWn a card.
Press the middle mouse button (3-button mouse) OR the left and
right mouse buttons simultaneously (2-button mouse) to pull up
the "Boss" screen. (See KEYS TO KNOW section above)
At any point where you may STRIKE ANY KEY to continue, you may
press any mouse button instead if desired.
